Charity,

CAP '22

Local charity preparing for rise in demand as living costs soar.

Free debt help charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is expecting to see more Market Drayton people needing to use their services over the coming months, especially as the weather turns cooler.

Nationally, CAP has already seen a huge increase in requests for debt help and other financial support compared to this time last year, highlighting the impact that the energy crisis is already having.

Carolyn Lawrence, Debt Centre Manager in Market Drayton says, ‘Living shouldn’t cost everything, but for millions, it does. Some of our clients are already telling me that they don’t know how they are going to survive this coming winter and having to make difficult choices because their money will only stretch so far.’

Carolyn goes on to say, ‘The true impact of the cost of living crisis goes beyond finances and can affect people’s emotional wellbeing and their relationships. People have told me how the rise in prices is making them feel anxious and afraid. Many of these people are already in a vulnerable position because their budgets are so tight that there isn’t any extra money for an increase in energy bills. Often this situation is made worse because of existing debts and arrears and people are often not sure how to balance their money as the winter approaches.’

Carolyn says, ‘During this crisis, CAP and the churches who support the work are seeking to do everything they can to help the people of Market Drayton so do get in touch. Our help is for anyone of any faith or none and all our help is free. The churches will be offering some ‘warm spaces’ where people can go and sit and have a hot drink to save having their own heating on. Keep an eye out on social media for days and times over the coming months.

If you want to meet me and have a chat about ways CAP could help you, you can drop into the Parish Rooms on a Tuesday morning between 9.30 and 10.30am.

If you need advice or support with debt, seek help sooner rather than later. Simply call CAP’s freephone number, 0800 328 0006, or visit capuk.org to speak to one of our accredited Debt Advisors.

The most important thing we want you to know is that you are not alone and there is always hope.
