Over forty years ago, public-spirited volunteers set up a free service operating from Market Drayton Library.
This was to ensure the housebound could carry on borrowing books despite being unable to access the library in person.
The Home Library Service has since run continuously providing those who cannot access the library with the chance to have books delivered to their door.
This free service is still available today providing the vulnerable and elderly with the chance to enjoy the library’s services. Its volunteers deliver books fortnightly to any housebound person in Market Drayton town who likes to read but cannot get to the library.
Genre preferences and book formats are discussed with borrowers at the outset. A bag containing a carefully chosen selection is then delivered fortnightly. Borrowers using the Home Library Service can borrow as many books as they need to see them through the fortnight and can borrow for longer than two weeks if required. There are no charges for items returned late. As well as normal print books, the volunteers now deliver audiobooks on CD and large print books.
If you or a relative who lives in town might benefit from this service, please contact Market Drayton Library on 01630 652105 to discuss the service and get started.
